The Nautical Astronomy course is aimed at all navigators interested in learning to orient themselves and navigate using stars and other celestial bodies. Ideal for those who wish to complement their traditional navigation knowledge with astronomical techniques. This course is taught at our facilities and on our vessels, combining theory and practice for comprehensive training.
Duration: 4 hours of theory and 4 hours of practice.
Theoretical Content:
- Introduction to nautical astronomy: history and fundamentals
- Identification of celestial bodies: stars, planets, constellations
- Use of the sextant: measurement of angles and heights
- Principles of astronomical navigation: celestial and terrestrial coordinates
- Nautical tables and almanacs: how to use them
- Calculation of position at sea: position lines and altitude intercept
- Astronomical navigation during the day: use of the sun and other celestial bodies
Practical Content:
- Handling the sextant: calibration and precise measurement
- Observation and recognition of stars and constellations from the boat
- Practice in calculating position using the sextant and nautical tables
- Determination of time and longitude through solar observations
- Taking altitudes of celestial bodies and reducing observations
- Application of theoretical knowledge in real navigation situations
- Practice of navigation using only astronomical references
